Physical Education forms a key part of the ‘Creative Curriculum’ at Wordsworth, which aims to nurture and enrich the whole child. PE has a high profile within the school and we work hard to ensure that all children participate in regular physical activity, helping to promote a healthy mind and body. All children are given the opportunity to take part in competitive sport, both within school and against other schools, and through this children learn key skills for later life, such as teamwork, communication and fair play.
2017-18 was a very successful year for PE at Wordsworth. We have continued to work closely with the Southampton FC charity, Saints Foundation, and the Premier League Primary Stars scheme to ensure that all children have access to high quality PE teaching. As well as this, the children in Year 5 and 6 elected ‘Sports Leaders’, who have received specialised training to support during PE lessons and run games with younger children at lunchtimes.
Our Year 5 and 6 football team competed in tournaments for the first time, attending events organised by Eastleigh FC and Saints Foundation, and even hosting our own game here at school. They placed a very respectable third place in the Saints Foundation Primary School World Cup in July! The Wordsworth Cross Country team were also very successful, competing in a number of events at Southampton Sports Centre and Stroud School in Romsey. The Year 5 boys’ team placed 9th in the Southampton City Cross Country League.
In 2017-18, we made effective use of our School Sports Premium funding to improve the quality of PE teaching across the school. We purchased a wide array of new PE equipment to be used in lessons and at lunchtimes, and all children participated in sessions run by the specialised sports coaches at Team Spirit. As well as this, the fund was used to support our participation in competitive sport, including tournaments against other JEP schools and transport to matches for the football team.
In 2018-19, we will be using our funding to improve our outside PE space by adding artificial grass surface which can be used in all weathers. This will feature markings for a variety of sports including football, netball and athletics.
