WORDSWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

Design & Technology

How we teach Design and Technology at Wordsworth Primary School

At Wordsworth, we teach Design and Technology as a ‘real life’ subject focusing on researching, experimenting, designing, creating and evaluating. At Wordsworth, we aim to develop resilient learners equipped with skills that allow them to become independent, creative and critical thinkers and to explore the possibilities of what they could become in the future.
From the Early Years onwards, right through Key stage One and Two, children will be given opportunities to work to a relevant and purposeful design brief, explore ways of completing practical tasks including joining, strengthening, exploring mechanisms, cooking, using computers to create designs and then to evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria.

What does that look like in our lessons?

  • Highly motivated and inspired children
  • Children being given opportunities to look at current products on the market that they can have a ‘hands on’ experience with
  • An array of experimenting, allowing children to make designs based on their understanding and allowing opportunities for creative outcomes
  • Children being taught a wide variety of D&T skills covering aspects such as food and nutrition, CAM mechanisms, sewing and textiles and building, joining and strengthening a range of materials
  • Technical language being modelled by the teachers and embedded into children’s learning.
