Our Language of the Week is Romanian

We have 27 children who can speak Romanian at Wordsworth Primary.

As part of marking the celebration of International Mother Language Day (21st February), we are delighted to announce that for the third year in a row, one of our children was successful in the UK-wide Stephen Spender School Laureate Prize.

Under Mrs Gheorghita’s supervision, a few pupils chose poems from different languages and translated them into English, ensuring they kept the message and the flow of the original poem. They did this with real enthusiasm and commitment, which made us all very proud.

The children who entered the competition proved not only translanguaging skills, but also a drive to go the extra mile, to try something new and to persevere.

This year, we are celebrating Milena's success in Year 6; she won the prize for the KS1/KS2 category with the poem Tattletale. She impressed the jury with her translation, especially because she managed to make it rhyme! As part of her prize, Milena was gifted some books and the chance to take part in a poetry workshop. The school invited Milena’s parents to a celebration assembly where she was awarded her certificate and an Amazon voucher on behalf of the school.

This is just another opportunity for us to say how proud we are of all our Wordsworth children who speak another language or are interested in learning a new one, and how much we enjoy celebrating the different backgrounds and cultures in our diverse community.

The winning poem is below:

Skarżypyta

By Jan Brzechwa

„Piotruś nie był dzisiaj w szkole,

Antek zrobił dziurę w stole,

Wanda obrus poplamiła,

Zosia szyi nie umyła,

Jurek zgubił klucz, a Wacek

Zjadł ze stołu cały placek”.

„Któż się ciebie o to pyta?!”

„Nikt. Ja jestem skarżypyta”.

Then translated:

Tattletale

By Jan Brzechwa

‘Peter wasn’t at school today,

Antek made a hole in the table that was grey,

Wanda stained the tablecloth,

Zosia didn’t clean her scruff,

Jurek has lost his keys,

Wacek ate all the cookies!’

‘Who is asking you about that?’

‘No one. I am a tattletale, so what?’

We have 2 SEND workshops coming up; please see details below:

House Points

Our children who earned the most House Points earned a hot chocolate with the headteacher yesterday (Thursday 23rd October). They had marshmallows and cream if they wanted it. Their House Points are now reset and any child can earn this reward, which will happen once at the end of each half term.

The winning house have 25 minutes extra play outside today as part of their reward.

The name Mărțișor is a diminutive of March (Martie in Romanian) but also the name of the little talismans with red and white strings, offered as gifts during this holiday. It is believed that people who wear the red and white string will enjoy a prosperous and healthy year. From March 1st to March 8th, when Romania celebrates Women’s Day, everything revolves around these tiny gifts. To learn more about Romania, please click the below.

In July, we took part in a competition across the UK and Ireland - The Stephen Spender Prize in two categories: Schools Laureate Prize and The Portuguese Spotlight. Children chose poems from any language and translated them into English. It was rewarding to see them put in the extra effort, try something new, and also do it so well.

We received the results and are delighted to announce that we have three children who impressed the jury with their translations:

Nellie Kokocinska - commended in KS1-2 category - Schools Laureate Prize (who translated a poem from a language she doesn't speak - La Steaua)

Antonio Nogueira - highly commended in the Portuguese Spotlight with a translation from Portuguese (Mar Portugues)

Amelia Ambrozy - winner in KS1-2 category - Schools Laureate Prize with a translation from Polish (Liczanki)

This competition is a fantastic opportunity which is more than poetry and languages - it celebrates creativity, multiculturalism, community and diversity - a lot of what defines our Wordsworth children. Well done to everyone who entered their poems.

Our school honoured the three children in an assembly, where they received Amazon vouchers, books and pens. Their parents were invited to join in the celebration of their success.

Our thanks go to Mrs Gheorghita who coordinated the school's entries to this competition and gives such wonderful support to the children at our school who speak different languages.

Here is Amelia's winning translation:
