At Wordsworth, we believe that children learn best when the subject is relevant to them, includes 'real life' experiences and stimulates their interest. We have a strong emphasis on the basic skills of reading, writing and maths, but aim to develop the whole child, so these skills are part of a much broader, creative, indepth curriculum.

We have a positive, caring and supportive environment within which the academic, personal, social and spiritual potential of each child can be fully developed. All children are entitled to the best quality education regardless of their abilities and behaviours.

Learning is approached through a topic led curriculum, the focus of which changes every half term. This approach enables the basic skills, attitudes, values and knowledge that we wish to develop to be taught in a more meaningful context.

Learning is arranged in different ways depending on the subject taught and the age of the children. The children are often taught as a whole class, as a group or on an individual basis. Children are taught in flexible groups according to where there are now and where they need to go next, taking account of previous learning and the rate of their progress. Work is matched to the ability of individuals and uses practical activities to make learning fun and relevant.

We are now developing our curriculum to take account of changes in the new National Curriculum and Assesment guidelines, in a way that will address the challenges that face education in the 21st Century.
